Pack Like the Pros: Traveling with Scuba Gear

Packing for any trip can be a process. But when you add in endless equipment – from wetsuits to regulators — it can get even trickier. To bring it all, you’d need multiple suitcases (and maybe even a Sherpa). And with airline restrictions and regulations, it’s just simply not doable.

We looked at savvy scuba travelers and learned their strategies for maximizing baggage allowances, avoiding fees, and making sure it all gets to the right place—in one piece.

5 ESSENTIAL SCUBA GEAR PACKING TIPS

  1. PACK YOUR BCD in your bag first so it can provide a cushion for other equipment

    • Make sure all the air is out of it before packing, then fold the sides in tightly to maximize space

  2. PROTECT YOUR MASK by storing it in the heel of your fin. For more  protection, wrap the mask in a piece of clothing to prevent scratches

  3. PLACE YOUR FINS along the sides of your bag to provide extra protection to other equipment

  4. PACK WETSUITS and clothing around regulators and other sensitive equipment for added cushion

  5. WEIGH YOUR BAGS before you fly to make sure you meet airline requirements

LEARN THE RULES

Every airline is required to publish its baggage allowances and overage charges. It’s a tedious task, but we recommend reading the airline rules and restrictions so you can maximize your luggage.

GET CREATIVE

You can only fit so much in your carry-on, so you may have to find other ways to carry those items on. Luckily, there are plenty of options. Some underwater photographers prefer to keep their personal items close with pocket-laden vests. There are options that have 12 to 20 pockets and can hold up to 20 lbs. So, you may have to sacrifice style, but it’s all in the name of scuba.

ADD A BUFFER ZONE

When you add laptops and cameras, your scuba equipment gets even more fragile. This adds another layer into the packing process. Literally. Since most diving bags are soft-sided, you can make a protective “frame” with your fins. Plus, you can use your wetsuit and clothes for a little extra padding.

KEEP IT SIMPLE

Tupperware and reusable baggies are simple (and affordable) solutions for organizing your smaller items and protecting them. Plus, zip ties are TSA-friendly and can act as a disposable lock for your checked bag.

Now? You’re ready for your trip, so book those flights and get ready to fly your way to your next best dive.
