Scuba Diving with the Whole Family

When it comes to family vacation, it’s hard to resist the temptation to sneak away for a quick scuba diving excursion. Been there. Rather than spending the day away (and missing out on quality family time), you can plan your trip and have the best of both worlds.

BE OPEN ABOUT THE OCEAN

When you begin planning your trip, talk to your spouse from the start. If you set expectations about dive times, your family can plan another activity to keep them occupied for the day—and you won’t feel guilty when you’re getting ready to head out for your dive.

KEEP THE CREW HAPPY

Pick a location that is fun for the whole family (not just ideal for diving). Many dive spots, like the Cayman Islands, double as vacation hubs so there’s no shortage of sights to sees and things to do. You may even want to consider a family-friendly resort that offers diving lessons for your littles.

SHARE YOUR SKILLS

If you want to take the whole family scuba diving, you should contact the dive shop and get your children certified before you book. Let the dive shop know you’ll be bringing along junior divers who have little prior experience. The dive shop will appreciate the advanced notice. Divers ages 10-15 years-old have different depth restrictions so they may not be able to go on every dive. You should also make sure the dive shop has the following for your family:

  • Wetsuits, BCDs, and other equipment in smaller sizes

  • Guided dives with multiple divemasters

You may want to find out if they have alternative options to help get your families’ feet (or fins) wet. Many dive shops have snorkeling or snuba, which can be a great way to start.
