How to Prepare Your New Mask for Diving

Whether it’s your first or fifteenth, getting a new mask is always exciting. But before you dive in with your new gear, make sure you prep it first. That’s because a thin film of silicone and other chemicals are left on the lens of your mask during the manufacturing process. And if you don’t clean this invisible film off your mask before your first dive, it will fog every time (even if you use standard de-fogging measures). Fortunately, pre-treating your mask is relatively simple. All you need is a non-abrasive cleanser and some patience. Here’s how to prepare your new mask in five easy steps.

  • STEP 1: Apply a dab of cleaning agent (non-gel toothpaste or dishwashing detergent work great) to the inside and outside of the mask lens.
  • STEP 2: Using your finger, scrub the mixture vigorously into all parts of the lens in a circular motion.
  • STEP 3: Rinse the lens with water, continuing to use your fingers to get rid of the paste (especially around the edges where it may have accumulated).
  • STEP 4: Once the mixture has been rinsed off, dry the lens carefully with a clean towel or washcloth.
  • STEP 5: Repeat the above steps (making sure to dry the lens in between each application) a few more times. How will you know when your mask has been sufficiently prepped? Put it up to your face and exhale into it without applying any defog. The mask should fog slightly but not so much that you can’t see through it.

A few things to keep in mind: These instructions are for glass lenses only and not plastic or polycarbonate lenses (these types of lenses scratch easily and even a mild agent like toothpaste could ruin the mask). Also, make sure that whatever cleaning agent that you use does not contain bleach—this is way too harsh for your mask’s delicate lens. And remember that, while necessary, pre-treating a mask will not prevent it from fogging on your dives—you’ll still need to take de-fogging measures each and every time. Happy diving.
